🦬 Mercedes C Class Ignition Switch Problems
A problem that Mercedes-Benz owners may face is the key no longer turns in the ignition. This issue is often caused either by a defective key, bad shifter module, a failed Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS) also known as the EIS-EZS or a bad steering lock module (ESL). This problem can affect various Mercedes-Benz models including Sprinter, Vito, Viano, E-Class, S-Class, C-Class, CLK-Class, ML
The symptoms are: steering lock solenoid works but does not lock the wheel, the alarm does not function in any situation, the alarm #7 fuse was blown and replaced, and the key is dead only in the ignition. Lights and remote operation are normal. The battery is strong. The K40 relay block was changed out with the ECM and immobilizer.

I have the same problem this morning in my 2001 E320. The remote key unlocked the car, but the key will not turn in the ignition. I jiggled the steering wheel, jiggled the key, checked the fuses, and jumped the battery. Nothing has worked. I talked to an independent shop, and they think the problem may be the ignition switch.

Failure Date: 08/22/2016. The electronic steering lock suddenly failed making it impossible to start the car. This is a very common problem with mercedes of this era, this happens without warning, and mercedes is aware of the problem, but charges approx. $1,200 to replace the lock. This leaves motorists stranded.
Remove the two plastic covers surrounding the steering column and the transponder ring and forcefully strike the lock face using the wooden dowel and hammer. After each striking insert the key and try to turn. Do not use contact cleaner, it is a drying agent. Use Lock-Ease as I originally suggested.
